Dow building solutions (midland, mich.) three extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) plants in Japan have successfully applied a new polymeric flame retardant technology. DOW Kakoh (Tokyo), a joint venture between DOW and sumitomo chemicals, has started making XPS laced with a new polymeric flame retardant, Poly FR.
"We have conducted large-scale tests on this new product and found that it is more flame retardant," said Takahiro Sugiyama, President of Dow Kakoh. "starting in May 2014, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) flame retardants will be banned in Japan.
Brominated flame retardants are very effective at preventing fires in plastics and textiles, but they can also persist in the environment for long periods of time and accumulate in biological tissues. The Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants banned the use of tetrabromodiphenyl ethers and pentabromodiphenyl ethers in 2009 due to possible health effects. In May 2013, the United Nations voted unanimously to ban another ban: the worldwide use of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD).
In September 2013, the EPA released a draft report on alternatives to HBCD flame retardants. The EPA lists findings to help manufacturers identify alternatives that are safer than HBCD. In the report, EPA indicated that PolyFR is safer than HBCD.
All of dow's XPS foam plants in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Japan will use the new PolyFR technology. As many factories are involved, the transformation takes a process. Japanese factories began operating in 2013, followed by European and north American ones.
Dow introduced and developed PolyFR in 2011, a stable, high molecular weight, pbt-free (persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic) substance. This more appropriate additive could provide a fire safety solution for XPS and EPS foam to enable these thermal insulation materials to continue to meet increasing global energy efficiency regulations and ecological building design requirements.
