In recent years, the development of halogen flame retardants has been greatly affected by the inclusion of decabromodiphenyl ether and hexabromocyclododecane as persistent organic pollutants. Compared with halogen flame retardants, the concept of halogen flame retardants promotes the development of research and manufacture of halogen free flame retardants including phosphorous flame retardants. After 2005, the price of bromine continued to rise, in sharp contrast to the price stability of domestic phosphorus resources, resulting in a rapid increase in the price gap between the two, and even bromine flame retardants once more than double the price of most phosphorus flame retardants. Therefore, the increase in the price of brominated flame retardants promoted the rapid growth of the market of phosphorous or phosphorous nitrogen flame retardants from 2005 to 2012.
In 2012, the consumption of flame retardants in China was about 474,000 tons, of which the proportion of phosphorous flame retardants was ****, and the total was about 179,000 tons, compared with the consumption of 90,000 tons in 2008, with a growth rate of 16.4%. There are many reasons for the high growth of the phosphorous flame retardant market. We believe that the most important reason is the high price of bromine flame retardant, its main competitor, followed by the downstream market, and the impact of policies and regulations.
Firstly, the price of bromine flame retardants leads to the rapid growth of phosphorous flame retardants. The world's leading bromine-based flame retardants are concentrated in yabao, cotya and ICL. Since 2010, the three companies have continuously raised their prices of flame retardants and bromine-related products. The rising price of bromine flame retardants will stimulate the consumption of phosphorous flame retardants and promote the growth of phosphorous flame retardants market.
Secondly, the rapid development of downstream industry promotes the consumption growth of phosphorus-containing flame retardants. Halogenated phosphate esters and halogen-free phosphate esters account for 74% of the consumption of phosphorus-containing flame retardants in China. They are mainly used in building thermal insulation materials, fire-resistant coatings, adhesives, copper clad plates, composite materials and other rapidly developing fields. Halogen-free phosphate esters are widely used in PC/ABS alloys. Ammonium polyphosphate is mainly used in fireproof coatings and general purpose plastics. Hypophosphite is mainly used in engineering plastics such as polyamide and polyester. Red phosphorus flame retardant is mainly used in engineering plastics and general plastic flame retardant; Phosphorus and phenanthrene flame retardants are mainly used in copper clad sheet.
China began to study the synthesis and application of ammonium polyphosphate in the 1980s, and has witnessed particularly rapid development in recent years. In 2003, the domestic consumption of ammonium polyphosphate reached 88,000 tons, and in 2012, it reached 26,000 tons, showing a trend of continuous growth. With the strengthening of national requirements on flame retardant technology, phosphorous flame retardants will continue to play a steady role in the future development due to their price advantages.
