From Energetic to Flame Retardant
Ou Yuxiang is not only a well-known scholar in the field of flame retardant materials in China, but also has made great achievements in the field of energetic materials. Since entering the gate of Beijing Institute of Technology (now Beijing University of Technology) in 1954, Ou Yuxiang has formed an indissoluble bond with energetic materials, and specializes in the synthesis of energetic compounds. Over the past 50 years, more than 100 energetic compounds have been synthesized by Ouyuxiang. He participated in the development of a new process for the preparation of Oxotrope by sulphuric acid, which has reached the international advanced level through the identification of relevant departments. The synthesis and optimization of high energy density compound hexanitrohexaazoisowurtziane (C-12) is one of the important contributions of Ouyuxiang in the field of energetic materials. His research achievements on C-12 have published dozens of papers in leading domestic journals and authoritative international journals of energetic academia and international conferences. He has applied for five invention patents and four have been granted invention patents. These papers and patents cover the synthesis, reaction mechanism, reaction kinetics, preparation process and micro-molecular structure of C-12 and its high-energy derivatives. One of them is in the British Museum Library. The above papers have attracted the interest and attention of many researchers in the field of energetic materials at home and abroad. In view of his fruitful achievements, the National Defense Science and Technology Publishing Fund funded him to write a monograph on applied science, High Energy Density Compounds, which was published in 2005. Propulsion and Power and Heterocyclic Chemistry both published monographs written by him, introducing the progress of China and his own research achievements.
Both energetic materials and flame retardant materials, Ouyuxiang has made great achievements, and has published more than 20 books and more than 300 papers on the two materials. It participates in or is responsible for compiling energetic materials and flame retardant materials in many large encyclopedias and dictionaries in China. As the first prize winner or inventor, he has won one first prize for national defense science and technology progress and many other prizes, and seven national invention patents. In 2003 and 2005, he was recommended as an effective candidate for academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 2001, it was included in the List of World Outstanding Scientists in the Twentieth Century by Cambridge International Biography Center.
Ou Yuxiang attaches great importance to the cultivation of talents while tackling key problems in scientific research. He respects students'interests and interests, encourages them to innovate independently and gives them full academic freedom. However, when reviewing students' papers, he is extremely strict and revises them repeatedly. Even punctuation marks require standardization. The papers written by Dr. Ou Yuxiang and Mr. Yan Shichu are often published in famous domestic academic journals such as Chinese Science, Organic Chemistry, Journal of Chemistry of Colleges and Universities, Science and Engineering of Polymer Materials and other authoritative foreign journals with innovative ideas. After nearly 20 years of unremitting efforts, the National Professional Laboratory of Flame Retardant Materials, which he and his colleagues co-founded, has become a comprehensive and high-level scientific research and personnel training base of flame retardant technology in China. Ou Yuxiang has trained more than 30 doctoral students. Some of them are working abroad, some are studying in Chinese Academy of Sciences, some are teachers in universities, some have become tutors, and most of them have become the backbone of scientific research and production in the field of flame retardant materials and energetic materials in China.
From Safety to Environmental Protection
Flame retardant research has been recognized as one of the important strategic measures to prevent and reduce fires, protect people's lives and property, and protect the environment. When Air France flies to Toronto for emergency landing, the use of flame retardant materials in the cabin did not trigger a fire, but also increased the intensity of research on flame retardant materials in some developed industrial countries. Since the establishment of the National Professional Laboratory of Flame Retardant Materials in China, Ou Yuxiang has actively promoted the development of China's flame retardant materials industry, and always set up the concept of fire safety and flame retardant must be environmentally friendly.
Since the establishment of the National Professional Laboratory of Flame Retardant Materials in China, the international community has paid full attention to the environmental protection of flame retardant. Ou Yuxiang has always expressed his deep approval and support for this, because environmental protection is not unfamiliar to him. When he was studying in the UK in his early years, every researcher had bottles containing waste liquor which were recycled every day by a specialist, and environmental workers often tested the water quality of rivers near the school. These details of environmental protection have left a deep impression on Eyuxiang. So since more than ten years ago, almost all of the materials he studied are environmentally friendly flame retardants. He has been actively promoting the halogenation and environmental protection of flame retardant materials in China, and has appealed for and committed to improving the product structure of flame retardant industry in China. He also actively participated in the discussion of the regulations on environmental protection and flame retardant of public places Products promulgated by the Ministry of Public Security, and assisted in compiling relevant textbooks. Whether it is a cooperative project with domestic or foreign enterprises, from the whole process of design-development-application-recycling, he adheres to the unswerving principle that flame retardant must be environmentally friendly.
Under the leadership of Beijing University of Chemical Technology, the National Laboratory of Flame Retardant Materials and many other units in China have participated in the declaration of the National Science and Technology Support Project "Substitution Technology of Materials Containing Toxic and Hazardous Elements", which has been approved by the State. Part of the content is to develop environmentally friendly flame retardants to replace some harmful traditional halogen flame retardants, which is also the goal of Ou Yuxiang. Now, Ou Yuxiang is also working with other colleagues in the laboratory to apply for 863 project "Reactive Silicon Phosphorus Flame Retardant and High Temperature Resistant Engineering Plastics and Processing Technology". This project mainly studies environmental friendly flame retardant engineering plastics with temperature resistance of more than 300 degrees Celsius. At present, most of these high-grade flame retardant materials are imported from China.
Ouyuxiang has also made important contributions to improving the theoretical level of flame retardant industry in China and expanding international exchanges. He has published six Monographs on flame retardant materials, and his latest 1.6 million-word Handbook on Flame Retardant Plastics will be published this year. In addition, he has published more than 100 papers on flame retardant technology, hosted and organized three international conferences on flame retardant technology held in Beijing, and edited many collections of this paper. These monographs and papers are widely cited in the domestic flame retardant industry, and are praised as foundational works, which help to improve the theory and technology level in the field of flame retardant in China. His book "Flame Retardant" won the first prize of Petrochemical ** Science and Technology Book in 2006, Flame Retardant Polymer Material won the first prize of National Defense Industry Publishing House ** Book in 2001, and Practical Flame Retardant Technology was awarded the top-quality textbook of Beijing Higher Education in 2004. The book "Flame Retardants" is also called "Bible" by Mr. Sherling of Nardmann Rassmann Company in Germany.
China Plastic Processing Industry Association believes that Ouyuxiang's work in the field of flame retardant materials has played an active role in promoting the scientific and technological progress of modified plastics, especially flame retardant plastics, improving the flame retardant and environmental protection properties of plastics products, especially electronic and electrical products, and has made outstanding contributions to the processing and manufacturing of plastics products.
